MSCC events

Education is the key to ensure improved awareness and management of MSCC patients within Manchester Cancer.

Education has successfully been undertaken in all sectors of health care (tertiary, secondary and primary care).

Training sessions have also taken place in the following trusts and organisations: Christie, Bolton, Leighton, Central Manchester, Pennine, Wythenshawe, Macclesfield, St Anne’s Hospices, Wigan Hospice and East Cheshire Hospice.  Attendees have included, doctors, nurses, radiologists and therapists.

Shorter awareness sessions have been given throughout departments at the Christie, CNS meetings at Salford Royal, Lead Cancer Nurse meetings, GP and Physiotherapy meetings.  Presentations at National Study Days and Conferences on the role of the Network MSCC Co-ordinator has also taken place since the launch of the service.

The Christie have hosted four national MSCC study days which have been very well attended and highly evaluated:

Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression Study Day – 13th November 2009

The 2nd Christie Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression Study Day – 27th October 2011

Metastatic Spinal Cord compression evening event – Medical Management, MSCC Pathway & Rehabilitation – 15th August 2013

The 3rd Christie Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression Study Day – 13th May 2015

It is vital that education continues.  Feedback demonstrates staff have a better understanding of the management of MSCC, with clinicians feeling more confident about caring for patients in a timely way.
