The Christie at Oldham campaign
The Christie at Oldham
Christie’s are running an appeal in partnership with the Oldham Evening Chronicle throughout 2009. Help us raise our target of £100,000 to help equip the £17 million radiotherapy centre due to open at the Royal Oldham Hospital next year.
The unit will be staffed by cancer experts who will provide radiotherapy treatment to 1,200 people every year who would otherwise have to travel to the Christie from Oldham and surrounding areas.
The centre will house two £1.3 million linear accelerators which will be used to give radiotherapy treatment to 70 patients every day, and it is towards the cost of those that the appeal was launched.
David Messom, who’s from Rochdale was recently treated at The Christie for sarcoma (cancer of the connective tissue). He was full of praise for the expert care he received, but found the journey in and out of Manchester very tiring.
David said “It would have made a massive difference to me to still be able to see Christie staff, without travelling all that way.
If you’d like to get involved in our appeal, here’s what you can do:
Ken Collett, Manufacturing Director - Money Controls, Dave Ellwood, Chairman - BACTA, Laura Baynham-Hughes, Corporate Partnerships Manager - The Christie charity, Frank Rothwell, the 'Christies at Oldham' business champion
Members of BACTA, the British Amusement and Catering Trades Association, have shown their generosity by raising £5,000 for The Christie's new radiotherapy centre in Oldham.
The Christie has a special place in the affections of people throughout the North West of England, none more so than Money Controls' UK sales manager and BACTA North West regional chairman, Dave Ellwood. For, three years ago, Dave was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma, a type of skin cancer; and it was thanks to the skill and dedication of the medical staff at The Christie that Dave is now completely clear of the condition.
Dave considers himself doubly lucky: "Living in the area, I was lucky to have access to what is undoubtedly the best cancer treatment in the UK, in terms of both facilities and medical care. And, as this year's BACTA North West regional chairman, I am lucky in that I can nominate a charity to receive money raised by our members. So, thanks to the continuing generosity of our members, I am able to say a big 'thank you' to The Christie."
