CHRISTIE
EXPERTS SHOWCASE LATEST CANCER RESEARCH
People interested in learning more
about pioneering research at The Christie to understand
how cancer
treatments can affect people later in their lives can
attend a talk at The Christie next month.
The Christie
Hospital holds regular Supporter's
Seminars where people who have an interest in the work
of the hospital can come along and find out more about
how charitable funds are spent to improve treatment and
research.
Taking place on Wednesday September 7th, Professor
John Radford, Consultant in Medical Oncology at The Christie
will talk about the late effects of treatment.
Thankfully,
many patients are now treated successfully and can look
forward to a life beyond cancer. But this
means it has become increasingly important to understand
the long-term side effects that treatment can cause.
The
Christie's aim is to find ways of treating
patients that will help them avoid problems such as secondary
cancers, heart disease and infertility; and to provide
psychological support and advice to help them cope. This
is a new area of research only possible now that so many
patients are long-term survivors and Christie's
is currently fundraising to pay for this essential project.
Christie
Supporters' Seminars are open to anyone
who wants to learn about the work of Europe's largest
cancer treatment and research centre. They are part of
the Lady Margaret Holt Society - an organisation set
up to provide a forum for old and new supporters and
those who may be thinking about leaving something in
their will to Christie's. Expert speakers from the hospital
attend each meeting to highlight some of the advances
in cancer research or treatment which have been made
thanks to charitable funds and the kindness of donors.
Money
received from bequests is a very valuable source of
income for Christie's, the charity which supports
the work of The Christie.
Appeals Director, Toni
Leden says: "Many of the
important research projects underway at The Christie
rely on the generosity of kind-hearted people who had
the foresight to include a donation to us in their will.
"
Events like The Christie Supporters' Seminars help
us demonstrate how people's donations are making a real
difference to The Christie and anyone who is interested
in finding out more is welcome to come along.
