BANDING
TOGETHER FOR SONIA
Pictured at the Del Lago restaurant are owner Alberto Vernetti, Mickey Martin and Christie regional appeals officer Jacky Plant
Family and friends of a Rochdale woman who sadly died
of cancer earlier this year have been banding together
to raise money in her memory.
Sonia Martin, from Milnrow,
was aged 64 when she passed away in June following treatment
at The Christie
for kidney cancer.
Husband Mickey originally spear-headed
a fundraising drive for The Christie in 2000, raising thousands
from
cabaret evenings.
But when he received the dreadful news that
his wife had been diagnosed with cancer herself, Mickey became
even more determined to raise as much money as possible
and has since increased his total massively to an impressive £16,535.
Not
resting on his laurels, Mickey has now organised a series
of events in the New Year to boost the total
even more.
The first event will be charity evening at the
Del Lago restaurant in Littleborough on February 20th 2006.
The
second will be a cabaret dinner evening at the Jarvis Piccadilly
Hotel in Manchester on April 22nd where star
act will be the Backbeat Beatles.
Mickey said: “Cancer is a terrible disease and
it is criminal that it now affects so many people. We
all need to do what we can. Sonia knew that and was always
very supportive of our fundraising, which is why I'm
determined to carry it on in her memory. I'm pleading
with people to do what they can to support us, because
it is only by working together will we raise the funds
to make more research possible.
“ I'm trying to raise money by entertaining
and hopefully the shows will be fabulous and I'd
like to thank everyone who is helping me organise them.”
