STRAWBERRIES
AND CHAMPERS CELEBRATION
Group members celebrate
A small group of Nantwich The Christie Supporters
has made another bumper donation of £10,000 to
the specialist cancer centre – taking their grand
total over the last few years to a magnificent £80,000.
The
latest donation will once again be given to The Christie's Derek Crowther Unit which opened two
years ago specifically to conduct trials into new anti-cancer
drugs and treatments, some of them developed on site
in Christie's research laboratories.
Group chair Sarah
Darlington has a particular interest in the new facility
and good reason to be grateful to
the Manchester hospital. State of the art treatment and
the expertise of Christie medical staff saved the two
most important men in her life. Her father recovered
from cancer 25 years ago and her husband has been treated
successfully for Hodgkin's Disease, a cancer of
the lymph system.
Sarah and her husband Tim recently became
the proud parents of beautiful twins Jack and Mollie.
Sarah
said: “My loved ones survived cancer and
we've gone on to have our own family, but I'm
very aware that many are not so fortunate which is why
our group is determined to continue raising funds for
this new unit.”
A few years ago the group had considered
disbanding so they could concentrate on other activities
in their
spare time, but a visit to The Christie to see how some
of their money had been spent inspired them to carry
on.
Sarah added: “It made us realise how important
fundraising is and we're now more determined than
ever. The work at The Christie holds out so much hope
for future cancer patients, who will have access to new
drugs and different ways of treating this terrible disease.
Members of the group met with Christie staff recently
at one of their main events of the year – a strawberry
and champagne evening. The money was raised at other
events including a quiz night, race night, bingo evening
and a flag day.
Sarah said: “We're delighted to hand over
another £10,000 and we look forward to raising
even more in the future. As ever, we're extremely
grateful to the people of Crewe and Nantwich who continue
to give us amazing support at all our events.
