Press Release - 5th August 2005
TRIUMPHANT
TRAFFORD LADIES
Pictured left to right is Christie Corporate and Events Officer Jenny Haskey, with Trafford WTF members Joan Lee, Margaret Allen, Connie Screeton, Vera Clark and Jan Howsam.
A group of women from Trafford
who work tirelessly to raise money for Manchester's Christie
Hospital have handed
over another £8,000, reaching a massive milestone
needed to purchase new equipment to help in the fight
against cancer.
Trafford Women's Trust Fund (WTF) presented
their latest cheque recently and the group has now raised
the money
it needs for a new machine called the Quantitative Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR) machine at the Paterson Institute
for Cancer Research at The Christie.
Costing £80,000,
this is a critical piece of equipment which allows scientists
to test both normal and cancerous
tissues for certain genes. This is important because
knowledge of which genes are involved in the development
of cancer has the potential to lead to earlier diagnosis
and better treatments.
The money has been raised through
a combination of store collections, selling beanies and badges,
coffee mornings
and fairs, mainly in the Stretford area.
Trafford WTF
is a sub-committee of The Christie's Women's Trust
Fund who have raised more than £4
million for Christie's since it was formed in 1948 at
the birth of the National Health Service.
Christie Appeals
Director Toni Leden says: "We're
very grateful to the ladies of the Trafford WTF. They
have a long tradition of supporting Christie's and their
enthusiasm is as strong as ever. We're particularly
pleased this latest donation gives us enough cash to
purchase this very important piece of equipment for cancer
research.”
Not resting on their laurels, ladies of the Trafford
WTF are now set to start work on their next fundraising
project. They hope to raise £53,000 for an ‘isolator' for
Christie's new radiopharmacy. This extremely important
and essential piece of equipment will provide staff and
patients with protection from radioactive products used
in the treatment of cancer.
