Press Release - 26th November 2004
The
Spice Is Right For Rita
Rita Mehta with Professor Tony Howell, Christie Consultant in Medical Oncology
Bramhall woman has put her money where her
mouth is, raising almost £8,000
for Manchester's The Christie after organising a spectacular
Diwali Dinner and Dance.
Rita Mehta decided to start raising funds for
Europe's largest cancer treatment and research centre as a thank you
to the hospital for
treating a number of her friends.
She particularly wants the money to
be put towards breast cancer prevention and hopes specifically to raise
awareness amongst Manchester's
ethnic minority communities.
She said: "The Christie is
a marvellous place, and their work towards breast cancer prevention
is extremely important.
Unfortunately, the awareness of cancer is not as strong in the ethnic
minority communities as it should be, and hopefully these funds will
help hospital staff target those communities more proactively."
Rita raised £7,893
after organising and hosting the Diwali evening at the Nawaab restaurant
in Levenshulme with her husband
Manish. More than 200 people attended and the grand total was boosted
by a raffle and auction.
She added: "It was a fantastic night and I
would like to thank everyone who supported it. Hopefully, I intend to make
this an annual
event and am looking forward to raising even more money for a very
worthy cause."
