A group of Worsley ladies who bring all the finery of Ascot to Manchester
in the name of charity have raised a champion £15,000 for the
The Christie.
Audrey McIlroy and friends held their first Royal
Ascot Ladies' Day seven years ago after deciding to support Europe's
largest cancer
treatment and research centre as a thank you for treating numerous
close friends and relatives.
Every year they don their finest outfits
and hats and converge at the Marriott Hotel in Worsley on Ascot Ladies
Day - placing bets
on the races to raise as much money as possible.
And this year's event
raised a massive £7,500 - the most they
have ever made. The organisers met with staff from Christie's recently
to hand over the bumper sum.
Audrey McIlroy, who owns Felicity Hat Hire
in Worsley, said: "Unfortunately,
I have lost close friends to cancer and even have friends being treated
at The Christie at the moment. It is such an important place,
it is vital everybody does what they can to support it and it is
nice to be able to have some fun whilst raising money for a very
worthy cause."
