More than 2,000 staff at a Manchester-based clothing company are
helping kick cancer into touch, raising almost £5,000 to purchase
specialist chemotherapy equipment for The Christie.
Mail
order specialists JD Williams nominated Christie's
as its charity of the year and organised a football tournament
to raise as much money as possible for Europe's largest specialist
cancer treatment and research centre.
The money will be used to purchase
three Graseby pumps - essential equipment currently top of The Christie
shopping list.
A Graseby pump is a special infusion device which connects
to patients and slowly releases anti-cancer drugs that help to save so
many lives.
The pumps are in constant use so it is vital they are regularly replaced,
but with each one costing £1,600, the hospital relies on charitable
funds to be able to do that.
Christie's Special Projects Officer Dawn Rodgers: "These
vitally important items are on the hospital's priority equipment list,
so
the money donated by JD Williams is helping patients directly. This
is essential equipment we constantly have to replace so we are very
grateful for this donation and we'd like to thank everyone involved."
The
tournament, which involved five a side teams taking part in a knockout
competition, was organised by JD Williams analyst Moses
Kabunga.
He said: "As a Manchester-based company, we thought it
was important to support a local charity that benefits local people
so
Christie's was the obvious choice. Everybody knows somebody affected
by cancer so it is a tremendously important place and I hope our
contribution will help staff to continue to provide the best possible
care for cancer patients."
