Spell Success For Christie's
Mayor and Mayoress Cllrs Bill and Pauline Harrison with chair of Dukinfield Women's Trust Fund Jean Depledge
A group of Tameside women who have raised hundreds of thousands
of pounds for The Christie have just added a further £9,000
to their grand total for Europe's largest cancer treatment and research
centre.
Yet another year of successful fundraising by the Dukinfield
Committee of Christie's Women's Trust Fund (WTF) was marked by a
Christmas
potato pie lunch and a grand draw with Mayor and Mayoress Cllrs Bill
and Pauline Harrison.
Dukinfield was one of the founding committees
of the WTF which was formed 55 years ago and has been instrumental in establishing
the
hospital's world-famous Paterson Institute for Cancer Research and
the committee has continued to fund life-saving research and equipment
ever since.
The latest £9,000 will be put towards a new machine for the
Paterson Institute for Cancer Research at The Christie.
The Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine, which will
cost £80,000, is a critical piece of equipment which allows
scientists to test both normal and cancerous tissues for certain
genes. This is important because knowledge of which genes are involved
in the development of cancer has the potential to lead to earlier
diagnosis and better treatments.
Christie fundraising officer, Sarah
Bates. Said: "Dukinfield
and other WTF committees are among Christie's most loyal and long-standing
supporters. They show tremendous dedication and continue to work
very hard on our behalf. In more than 50 years century of fighting
cancer, they must have helped save countless lives."
As well as the traditional potato pie lunch, other fundraising activities
included bring and buy sales, collections, jam sales and raffles.
The potato pie lunch alone raised £2,800 with 57 prizes for
the grand draw donated by committee members and supporters.
Chairman
Jean Depledge said: "We are delighted our fundraising
is going from strength to strength and this year's lunch raised a
record amount. We'd like to thank the people of Dukinfield for their
tremendous support over the years."
