Press Release - 17th October 2003
New Broom Sweeps Up £2,800 For Christie's
From left, The Christie regional appeals officer
Jacky Plant (second left)
accepts the £2,800 cheque from (l to r) Marie Jones and Brendan Smith,
who both did the fancy dress walk, landlord Jimmy Johnson and landlady Paula
Skinner.
The New Broom Hotel is aptly named for Jimmy Johnson,
who took over as landlord of the Langley, Middleton, pub just this
Summer.
And one of the first things
he did was run a fun day which swept up a magnificent £2,800 for The Christie.
The new broom showed his mettle - and it went down well with regulars who
have previously raised over £4,000 for the Manchester cancer centre from
fun days and other events.
"Our customers were tremendous. I really couldn't have done it without them," says
Jimmy. "They helped organise it as well as joining in the events. One lad
built a set of stocks in which a few miscreants had water balloons thrown at
them; another customer arranged pony and trap rides; we had a bouncy castle and
a barbecue and several people did a fancy dress sponsored walk around Langley."
Jimmy is so pleased with the outcome that he's planning
a similar event for Christie's next year.
"What a fantastic group of people the New Broom customers are," says
Christie regional appeals officer Jacky Plant. "They've given us superb
support in recent years and are very loyal. We are hugely grateful to them and
to Jimmy for all his hard work."
