Press Release -15th September 2003
Express Delivery For Lucky Christie's Supporter
New Horizons General Manager David Castle is pictured
presenting Debbie, from Royton, Oldham, with the gift certificate for her trip
on the Orient Express.
From Manchester trams to the Orient Express, lucky
Debbie Gamble has won the trip of a lifetime thanks to a raffle
prize donated to The Christie by
Manchester's Metrolink.
In an ironic twist, the prize - a trip on the legendary Orient Express from
London to Venice - was originally won by Serco Metrolink, operators of Greater
Manchester's Metrolink Tram System, in a competition provided by local training
centre, New Horizons Computer Learning. Serco Metrolink then kindly donated
the superb prize to the specialist cancer centre as a
fundraiser and it was won by Debbie - a financial controller at New Horizons!
The raffle also raised £2,000 for Christie's.
Debbie, from Royton, Oldham hasn't been abroad for
five years and is thrilled with the prize. She plans to take her
dad, 63-year old George Beeston, along as a special treat.
Debbie said: "Lots of good things have happened to me recently, but this
has to be the best. I have never been to Venice so this fabulous prize gives
me the opportunity to treat myself and my dad. He will have the birthday trip
of a lifetime.
"As it will be the first time I've been abroad in about five years, my husband
has volunteered to stay at home with the two boys to give me a chance to spend
some valuable time with my dad, who lives seventy miles away."
Debbie and her dad will step aboard the Orient Express on October 9, just a
month before George's birthday on November 7. They will stay in Venice for
a couple of nights before flying back to Manchester.
George, who lived in Oldham for 20 years before moving to Towyn, North Wales,
earlier this year, is delighted to share Debbie's good fortune.
George said: "I've never had an experience like this. I'm really looking
forward to it - and to spending time with Debbie. Giving me such a wonderful
birthday present is typical of her thoughtfulness ."
Sarah Bate, regional The Christie charityr for The Christie, says: "This
is such an amazing prize. Serco Metrolink and New Horizons have provided a
terrific opportunity for Debbie and her dad and at the same time helped raise
vital funding towards research and equipment at the hospital. We're grateful
to the staff of the two organisations for supporting the raffle so generously.
We all hope Debbie and George have a great time."
