Lynn Farrington and Elaine Law.
After two
members of staff at Rochdale's Marks and Spencer store developed
cancer and began treatment at The Christie,
colleagues adopted the specialist cancer centre as their charity
for 12 months.
In their lunch breaks the 60-plus staff held a bring and buy,
sold books, raffle tickets and home made cakes to each other; some
did a sponsored slim; a dinner dance was held, and several staff
donated money they would have spent on sending Christmas cards
to workmates.
" Christie's is a very popular cause and everyone
was keen to help," says Elaine Law who, with fellow sports
and social committee member Lynn Farrington, organised the fundraising.
Their efforts generated £1,641 which Marks and Spencer matched
to give a total £3,282 for The Christie's
appeal. The cheque was presented to Jacky Plant, regional appeals
officer for the Manchester hospital.
Says Jacky: "We are very grateful to the staff - they came
up with some interesting ideas and worked hard to raise this money.
It will support the work of Christie specialists whose important
research is helping to find new ways of fighting cancer".
