Kind-hearted Girls Go The Extra Mile For Christie's
The girls on their visit to the hospital with Dr Mark Saunders.
Pupils
from Offerton High School have recently completed a big challenge
in support
of Manchester's The Christie.
The six girls, aged 14-15 ran 4km around Woodbank Park, Stockport in appalling
weather conditions, and managed to raise a fantastic £323.50 for bowel cancer
research at the Withington cancer centre. They organised the entire event themselves,
including first aid support.
Teacher
Vernon Poke was impressed with their determination.
" On the day of the run the weather was so terrible that we weren't sure whether
the girls would want to go ahead. However, they were determined to complete the
run and collect their sponsors, so they slogged around the track whilst the staff
took refuge under some nearby trees! We were so proud to see their determination
to help others."
Pupil Katie Wilson explained why they wanted to help
"We chose to donate our money to Christie's because we knew the money would go
to the care and treatment of people with cancer, and also towards research into
prevention and cures for cancer."
Consultant Dr Mark Saunders, who accepted the donation of behalf of the hospital,
praised the girls' hard work
"It was a pleasure to show the girls around The Christie. They were so enthusiastic
and had done a great job in raising so much money for research into bowel cancer."
The girls visited the hospital last week to observe the work which is carried
out. Katie was very impressed
"My first impression was that the hospital was a very cheerful, upbeat place.
The staff were very caring and considerate and were happy to answer all our questions.
We all want to say a special thank you to Dr Saunders as we thoroughly enjoyed
our visit, and hope to continue supporting his work in Year 11."
