Press Release - 22nd July 2002
IRENE S £9,000 THANK YOU TO CHRISTIE'S
Irene and Bill Parkinson present the cheque to The Christie
regional The Christie charityr Jacky Plant (left).
Businesswoman Irene Parkinson counts herself very lucky. She was diagnosed
with the lymph cancer non Hodgkin's lymphoma three years ago, had
surgery and has been clear of the disease ever since.
As she has regular check-ups at The Christie she decided the
cancer centre should share her good fortune.... And it's just received
nearly £9,000 worth.
Mrs Parkinson held a garden party in the grounds of her home in Breeze
Hill Road, Atherton, where 200 guests helped her raise £8,784, with
subsequent dontions taking the total to £8,809. They tucked into a
variety of barbecued food but there was no question what they would
be drinking. One of the Parkinson family businesses is a Burnley brewery
responsible for Moorhouses real ale!
Their main business enterprise is Atherton-based Lifting Gear Hire
Ltd, which employs 600 people in outlets across the UK. It also has
interests in America and Holland.
Said Irene: "I'm really thrilled, especially as this was my
first fundraising event. I've been wanting to do something to help
Christie's for a while but finding the time when you re in business
is difficult. I had a lot of support from friends, family and colleagues
so it has all been very worthwhile. We enjoyed ourselves despite
pouring rain".
Entrance fees, stalls and sales of raffle tickets helped raise the
magnificent sum. Irene and her husband, Bill, donated a holiday
in their villa in Menorca for the raffle and are grateful to local
businesses for other prizes.
Said The Christie fundraising officer Jacky Plant: "This
really is a fantastic sum to raise from one event. It will give
a huge boost to our funds for research and patient facilities. It
is through the generosity of people like Mrs Parkinson that we are
able, for example, to help finance the development of new techniques
such as gene therapy. This uses the body's own resources to fight
cancer and will lead to kinder, more effective treatments".
