£19,620 For Christie's From Sportsman's Dinner
Presenting The Christie cheque, for radiotherapy research and equipment, to hospital projects manager Petra Sheridan
Two Chinley businesses joined forces to stage a sportsmen s dinner
which raised a magnificent £19,620 for acclaimed specialist cancer
centre The Christie, Manchester.
Held at the Chinley Lodge Hotel and organised by hotel owners Nick
and Jane McCardle, the event was strongly supported by Duncan Makin,
managing director of the international PVC Group, and his son, Chris,
managing director of group company Eagley Plastics.
The 100 guests bid generously for impressive auction prizes including
a signed David Beckham shirt and a weekend in the Lake District -
transported there and back by helicopter. The shirt raised £2,600,
the Lake District weekend £2,300 and a signed Manchester City shirt
£1,900.
Formerly owners of a chip shop in New Mills, Nick and Jane have been
in the Chinley Lodge Hotel for just 17 months yet have already raised
£32,000 for charity.
"Everyone at the sportsmen s dinner dug dip deep into their pockets
because the event was for Christie's. I m delighted and would like
to thank all who helped us achieve this phenomenal amount," said
Nick. He plans to hold similar events next year for Christie's and
for Francis House children's hospice, Didsbury.
Duncan and Chris Makin, who provided several auction prizes and bought
tables, had a very poignant reason for supporting Christie's. Duncan's
wife, Stephanie, died from cancer four years ago at the age of 50.
"Christie's did all they could for her but in the end the cancer
was too widespread," said Chris. "Now my father and I are
determined to raise as much as we can for the hospital and have set
a target of £100,000 over the next 12 months. We are very encouraged
by the outcome of the sportsmen's dinner, which our customers and
suppliers supported generously, and will set some more events in train
after Christmas."
Said Petra: "It is a terrific sum to have raised from one
event and I know that a lot of hard work was involved. We are very
grateful to everyone concerned and especially thrilled by the promises
of continuing support.
