The Christie charityr Jacky Plant has helped the cancer centre's Asian Angels
support group raise £1,400 for equipment and research.
"We raised several hundred pounds by selling samosas, onion bhajis,
fruit salad and other dishes at the Asian Mela festivals in Heaton
Park, Manchester," said group chair Mrs Shafquat Jawaid, of Cheetham
Hill. She has made previous donations to The Christie and began fundraising
after her own successful treatment at the hospital some years ago.
Her family have also made donations in memory of her husband, Jawaid
Akhtar, who died two years ago (NB: not from cancer).
Family friend Abdul Sattar, also from Cheetham Hill, raised £1,000
by completing two marathons in the Manchester area.
"Christie's is very well respected in our community. We are a
small group - just myself and a few friends - but if our efforts to
help the hospital were more widely known I am sure that others would
join us in raising funds," added Mrs Jawaid.
Praising the Asian Angels efforts, Jacky Plant said: "They
are delightful people to work with. I know that before her husband
died Mrs Jawaid herself made a lot of the food that was sold. They
sometimes use the hospital's mobile Information Unit which has display
tables and is stocked with literature about the cancer centre s
work.
"We would love to hear from other members of the Asian community
who would like to help Christie's. They can contact me or other
Appeals staff on 0161 446 3988."
