BETTY AND REBECCA CREATE MONEY-SPINNING QUILT
The Christie Appeals Director Angela Roden draws the raffle from the quilt. The nimble fingers of Betty Croke, from Sale, and her 12-year-old
grand-daughter Rebecca Croke from Flixton, helped to create this beautiful
quilt which has boosted The Christie's coffers by nearly £2,000.
The Christie Appeals Director Angela Roden draws the raffle
from the
quilt, held by Betty and Rebecca Croke (second and third right)
and
Altrincham and Sale team members Pauline Renshaw, Iris Barnes, Janice
Moss
and Barbara Mannion.
Experienced quilter Betty enlisted Rebecca's help in sewing the
quilt together then asked Christie's Altrincham and Sale support
team to raffle it to raise money for breast cancer research.
"I knew that, with their extensive contacts, they could raise
far more money than I could by raffling it myself. I'm delighted
that it has generated so much cash," says Betty, who has offered
to make another quilt for Christie's.
She adds that it was "quite a feat" for Rebecca, a pupil
at Culcheth Hall School, Altrincham, to piece together and help
her transform twelve individually patched squares into a double
bed cover in just two weeks.
The squares were made by people from various parts of the country
in response to a competition by Patchwork and Quilting magazine
for the most original design on the Theme Galaxy. The quality of
work submitted was so good that the magazine asked for volunteers
to make the blocks into quilts that could be raffled for breast
cancer research.
The raffle was drawn by the cancer centre's Appeals Director Angela
Roden. The lucky winner of Betty's quilt lives in Winwick.
As well as selling tickets, the cancer centre's Altrincham and Sale
team provided prizes for the raffle. They've had a particularly
busy time - an open house at the home of team member Janice Moss
raised £1,700 and a Thai lunch at the Kantok Cafe, Altrincham, brought
in a further £1,156.
Says Christie's Regional The Christie charityr Rachel Roberts: "The
team have worked amazingly hard and we are delighted with their
efforts."
