New
Education & Professional Development Centre for The Christie
Jane Bennett in the new lecture theatre A new state-of-the-art Centre for Education and Professional Development
is being officially opened at The Christie today (Tuesday 9th
October).
The high-tech centre will ensure hospital staff continue to develop
the skills and expertise needed to provide patients with the highest-quality
service.
The education centre boasts some of the most high-tech audio and
visual equipment ever seen in a hospital education facility. A new
auditorium to seat up to 139 people and seminar rooms will be used
for training and study days. Equipment will include high-quality
x-ray and microscope image projectors, interactive whiteboards which
automatically save all work onto computers, and special facilities
for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The Hospital is already looking at introducing a live link from
the education centre to its operating theatres so that staff can
watch surgery taking place; using the auditorium as a evening cinema
for patients to watch blockbuster films; and web-casting where seminars
can be watched live by NHS staff across the country on their computers.
Arthur Sandford, Chairman of The Christie;
" We want to make sure that The Christie builds on and
shares its expertise. We are very proud of our staff and it is thanks
to their skills and knowledge that we are regarded as a national
and international leader in cancer care, research and development.
" To remain at the very forefront of cancer care we need to ensure
our staff have good opportunities to develop professionally. This
new centre provides an excellent environment in which to do this.
High quality training and education translates directly into high
quality treatment and care for our patients."
Leading cancer experts have always travelled from across the world
to speak at The Christie, but the Hospital previously had
limited education facilities. The planning for the new centre began
in 1998 and has involved a complex and sophisticated design and
construction project. The actual construction of the new Education
Centre has taken one year at a cost of £1,873,000. It has been built
on top of existing hospital facilities and comprises the main auditorium,
four seminar and meeting rooms, a lounge, and exhibition space.
Professor Martin Harris, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester
is officially opening the Education Centre.
