3T MRI Scanner Appeal
'A 3t Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner is urgently needed to help accelerate the development of new cancer drugs, by greatly improving our understanding of the effects they are having on cancer'
A new, more powerful MRI scanner is needed specifically to support increased research activity (new patient treatment centre)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) combines a powerful magnet and radio waves with a computer to produce pictures of any part of the body. The detail in these pictures allows the doctor to see soft tissues such as muscle, fat and internal organs as well as bone.
The power of a magnetic field is expressed in Tesla units. MRI scanners found in hospitals usually have 1.5-Tesla. Recently however, 3-Tesla scanners have been developed which are proving to be revolutionary for hospitals, such as The Christie, that also conduct medical research.
Bringing state of the art equipment to The Christie
It's the quality of the ultra-high resolution imaging that is the really revolutionary feature of the 3T. The more powerful magnification captures finer details of the anatomy enabling scientists and clinicians to identify blood supply to tumours and to track tumour shrinkage more accurately than ever before.
As a result scientists and doctors will be able to improve their understanding of cancer and will be able to offer patients more targeted therapies, assessing the impact of new drugs on tumour behaviour and the benefit from modifications to their dose to reduce side effects and improve drug effectiveness.
We want to be able to offer hope to more patients who can look forward to the future with confidence as more novel treatments move swiftly from the laboratory to the clinic.
Help us reach our target
The cost of the 3T scanner is £1.5 million and our charity needs to raise £1 million to bring it to The Christie. Please support us and help bring the latest state of the art equipment to The Christie.
Thank you!
