Celebrate Christie's £25m Success

Unprecedented public support has swept the Christie's appeal to its massive £25 million target in just four years, making it the most successful charity appeal ever mounted outside London.

This amazing achievement is reached as the North West's famous cancer centre also celebrates its 100th birthday - and a century of excellence which includes 'world firsts' in cancer research and treatment.

Christie's local support teams can take a special bow. At the outset they pledged to raise an ambitious £600,000 between them, but have actually achieved over £1m.

Confirmation of the achievement today delighted the appeal's Patron-in-Chief the Duchess of Kent who publicly launched the campaign in May 1997. She said: "Christie's is an extraordinary hospital with a remarkable reputation, It generates so much good will that it is like being part of a family." The Duchess chaired Christie's influential London supporters' group which raised over £3m.

Appeal chairman Lord Wade, of Chorlton, Chester, said: "The credit for this wonderful result goes to far more people than we could ever begin to thank.

"Our local support teams have worked tirelessly, companies and charity trusts have made generous donations, workers have encouraged their employers to support us and results have usually exceeded all expectations. The wider public too have contributed greatly to our success, giving time and again at events and to collections, Many people, including cancer patients, have taken on courageous -often daring- challenges to help us."

Appeals Director Angela Roden, who was herself treated at Christie's for breast cancer last year, added her own thanks. Then she looked ahead. "Success means we can move to the next phase of a continuing campaign against cancer. The £25m equips us with the tools in the form of very advanced equipment and facilities.

"Now we must re-dedicate our efforts towards the further funding of highly specialised research, for here lie the keys to increasingly effective results."

Angela added: "But that is the next chapter in the story of Christie's. For the moment, we hope everyone who has helped us come so far will join us in celebrating this great result - because they deserve to."
