PRESS RELEASE
12 June 2001
'A' team raise £5,200 for Christie's in bare-ly a year

Swept off her feetCrewe housewife Amanda Hinde is swept off her feet by some of the hunky men her small 'A' team of fund raisers have used to help raise over £5,000 for 'Christie's' in their first year.

Amanda decided to work for the centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer in memory of her dad William a transport driver who died from the disease nearly three years ago.

She began last June and her methods though unusual are very effective - she organises male stripper evenings. These have so far taken place at Warmingham Grange, RHM's Middlewich factory and the Black Greyhound in Northwich. During the latest, at Northwich RAF Wings Club, Amanda fell into the arms of Crewe lads Chris MacFarlane (left), Lee Wilkinson and Dave Wynne . The event raised £790, shared between The Christie and MacMillan Nurses charities, so lifting their Christie total past the £4,900 shown on her cheque.

Other 'A' team members are more orthodox - but equally successful including. treasurer Elizabeth Crabtree of Minshull Vernon. She belongs to 'Autumnal Amblers' a retired group of rambling friends some of whom did the six mile Foxtwist Walk around the Whitegates country area raising £800. Elizabeth's husband Ken was manager of MANWEB's South Cheshire area until he died from the disease four years ago. "I decided that Christie's were exceptional people and that if I could help them I would," she explained.

Through the walking group she then met retired chartered surveyor Gerald Blayney of Alsager whose wife Mary also died from cancer. They will be married in July and are requesting donations to Christie's appeal in lieu of gifts.

Another group member, Jane Oldbury-Shemilt helps solely because "Christie's is such a good cause". She does so mainly at Rolls Royce and Bentley where she is a team leader in the American Express travel office. Aided by collegues Hayley Morris and Gemma Sowden, Jane sells Christie teddies and other memorabilia to the workers, but she has also done so with permission from Sainsbury's in Nantwich where she lives..

"This is an 'A' team in every sense," said Christie regional appeals officer Ceri Johnson. "If anyone wants to join in the action they can contact me for details on 0161 446 3082."
