RELEASE
With a mixture of delight and relief 22 Wigan lads come to the end of their epic 90 mile bike ride for 'Christie's'. Waiting for them at the Bowling Green pub in Swinley were wives, families, mates and other sponsors who helped them raise nearly £9,000 by cycling over two days from Leeds alongside the Liverpool canal back to Wigan. The riders had to battle headwinds throughout the first 50 miles all the way to their overnight stop at Burnley. They had also to tackle some drainingly challenging main road hills when forced to leave their fairly level towpath route due to foot and mouth restrictions. The group wanted to help the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre because many of them have lost family members or have relatives or friends currently being treated for the disease. Organiser Nick Moulson of Swinley, a senior development engineer with British Aerospace, came up with the idea. "It had to be something we could do together and even though some of the lads had not been on a bike for 20 years they were all up for it", he said. "Some of us did ten to 20 mile training sessions but a few just turned up for the challenge. We all finished together and I reckon we can be proud of what we achieved and have raised for Christie's". The night before the ride wives and girl friends went to Nick's home to prepare and pack two days of supplies into cool boxes. These were loaded into a support van provided by Nissan of Chorley. Hitchin Foods transported the bikes, plus three spare machines, to Leeds as the lads travelled up courtesy of Hursts Coaches with the Plumb Centre and Mayalls giving some financial support. "Now we are thinking about tackling the Whitehaven to Sunderland coast-to-coast ride - but not until next year," said Nick. Ends Issued by Anne Statham PR 01625 526479/521279 |
