It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Everyone in Handforth's Mermaid pub reckons they have a good junior Sunday football side - especially their mums. But when women customers challenged the boys to a match they kicked off more than they could handle. The women lost 6-8 - despite cheating and corrupting the ref - and landlady Joanne Phillips has not walked properly since. Yet, as each member of the women's squad was sponsored by family, work mates and neighbours, they have so far raised over £300 for the 'Christie's' appeal. Joanne (second left centre) and landlord James Hannah put up a cup displayed by seven-year-old Jordan Cooke whose dad Charlie (far right) manages the Wythenshawe League boys' side. As they showed, the women didn't feel like losers. "Almost everyone came to watch. It was fun even though most of us had never played before", said Joanne. "We just wanted to help Christie's because of what they have done for some customers and others. I'm hoping we can do more fund raising events for the hospital because it certainly helps bring people together". The money goes towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre, now nearing its target. Ends Issued by Anne Statham PR 01625 526479/521279 |
