RELEASE
Once again the Nantwich Support Group for The Christie have been having a ball - with some style. At their first ball eight years ago organisers hoped to raise £2,000 for Manchester's famous cancer centre, yet realised £10,000. Another £12,500 came from their second event two years later. Now they have added a further £16,000 - plus a further £1,000 for local charities - from their third venture. The group's latest contribution will go towards 'Christie's' the hospital's £25m centenary appeal now nearing its target. Aided by many friends, committee members sold no less than 6,700 Christie bears and memorabilia items plus 3,500 raffle ticket books. Their third ball at Nantwich Civic Hall, sponsored by Birse Construction, Oracle the IT specialists and supported by many other businesses, was the climax of a year long effort. Some 400 people attended, paying £20 a ticket which included a five course dinner and dancing to The Chicago Teddy Bears' Society Jazz Band. Guests also gave generous support to the raffle for a Mercedes Benz toy electric car and other prizes, plus the tombola and fun casino on the night. The group, is chaired by Sarah Darlington who started working for Christie's because her father Tom was successfully treated there 25 years ago. He and his wife Marion were local poultry farmers until their off-shoot jam and chutney making business became so popular that 'Darlington and Daughters', now based in Crewe, is a local business legend. "We were incredulous when, after hoping for £2,000 from our first ball we actually made £10,000", said Sarah. "But it is wonderful to realise that, helped by so many friends and with much support locally, our group have now raised over £38,000 for Christie's - because it is such a good cause."
