PRESS RELEASE
29 May 2001
Irene's 'survival fund' passes £71,000

Irene presents Ceri with the chequeTen years ago Irene Edwards was successfully treated by The Christie for breast cancer. In gratitude, when she was well enough a year later, she set about fund raising for the North West's famous cancer centre.

Irene and husband Harry of Woolstanwood, Crewe, had never run a charity event before. But they took £300 worth of Christie gifts home and sold them. Since when she - and Christie's - have never looked back and her events have never failed to be successful. Soon, Irene was combining her work at a local supermarket and at The Lyceum Theatre with organising money spinning concerts that have won her several 'Woman of the Year' titles.

This week Irene (right) held her 'Ten Year Survival Party' at Crewe's Alexandra 'Rail Track' venue where, with Harry, she presented the hospital's regional appeals officer Ceri Johnson with a further £14,000. It takes her overall total to an incredible £71,000 in nine years. All the money has been devoted to either specific equipment for the hospital or to the £25m 'Christie's' centenary appeal now reaching its climax.

Some 150 people attended the survival bash and buffet. They were entertained by acts who have given their services at Irenes concert. They included the 'Third Party' band, 'Toy Zone' - Irene's local answer to 'Boy Zone' - namely Chris Edgeley, Adrian and Guiseppe Moscati, plus Liverpool comedian Joey Kaye.

The next Christie event is at Sandbach United Services Club on June 1. It will feature a girl singer first spotted by Irene as a nervous 16-year-old in a small charity concert in Nantwich nearly ten years ago. The girl went on to appear in two of Irene's shows, is now a Crewe housewife and, as Sarah Jane, recently won TV's 'Stars in Their Eyes', when she appeared as Kylie Minogue.

"In show business they say that nothing succeeds like success and for all her hard work and incredible commitment Irene deserves nothing less," said Christie's Ceri Johnson.
