RELEASE Macclesfield, Poynton and district fund raisers for 'Christie's' and their supporters are this week celebrating "a double century" of achievement. The twin toast at their special dinner dance was to Manchester's famous cancer centre - for leading the fight against cancers for 100 years - and to themselves for having now raised £100,000 towards the hospital's centenary appeal. This stunning total eclipses the £60,000 they "hopefully" set themselves shortly before the public launch of the hospital's £25m appeal in May 1997 and which has almost reached its huge target. In future Macclesfield group will direct their efforts specifically for Christie's new Innovative Treatment Unit - a .key project within the appeal. Members began their new campaign by donating the £3,000 proceeds of their dinner dance. Remarkably, the group have achieved most of their money at an average rate of about £25,000 per annum. As chairman Ian Ashcroft explained: "Being newcomers, we spent the first six months just finding our feet and achieved £8,000 in our first year. But, since then, thanks to wonderful support from local companies and people throughout the community, we have never looked back." Nevertheless Macclesfield have gained their six figures by determined graft. There have been no major money-spinning spectaculars - £7,000 from a 'Screaming Beavers' concert being the largest single amount. But they have held lunches, dinners, dances concerts and numerous car boot, and rummage sales, raffles and collections. So Christie's Appeals office were more than delighted to provide Ian and his team with special rtificates of their achievement. Cheshire Building Society paid their own tribute. They sponsored the celebration dinner dance at Bollington's Belgrade Hotel, under their community support programme. Ends Issued by Anne Statham PR 01625 526479/521279 |
