| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

RELEASE
They wanted to help Manchester's famous cancer centre in appreciation of the care given to a popular member of their committee, local window cleaner Brian Clews (60), who died from the disease earlier this year. So the BL Sports Section put up a memorial trophy and took on their friendly neighbours, losing the contest but raising £216. Then the 700 strong club staged a charity night with a raffle, offering tvs and other top prizes donated by local organisations. This raised nearly £1,200 - making £1,408 in total - towards the hospital's £25m centenary appeal which is now in sight of its target. This week the BL club invited Bert Thomas (second left) chairman of Christie's South Manchester 'home' team supporters to receive their combined cheque. It was presented by branch secretary Tommy Conway (second right) supported by MC Herbie Roberts, (far left) and committee members Tony Walsh (centre) and Kenny Clarke. Now the BL sportsmen are gearing up for a return match with the Tories at their Woodhouse lane venue in September. They are determined to win back Brian's trophy - and to raise more money for Christie's. Ends Issued by Anne Statham PR 01625 526479/521279 |
