It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. RELEASE Raising money for the North West's The Christie apparently came at no cost and proved no trouble for one local group of fundraisers. The group - organised by Joe Boyle and Derek Lancaster from Millom - sang and danced their way to £520 during a 'Free and Easy Night' at their local British Legion Club. The fun-filled event included karaoke, a guitar player and one of the guests even played an Accordion. The money was raised through the sale of raffle tickets and ten minutes of throwing ten pence pieces at a whiskey bottle. A cake and bottle of whiskey were also donated for auction, and an anonymous guest donated£100. Derek said: "We've held Free and Easy Nights before and have always had a good turn out. Although, this time twice as many people attended, with a wide mixture of local people ranging from teenagers to people over the age of 60 years. "There was a real variety of entertainment and everyone got involved in the singing and the dancing. "It was free of charge for anyone to attend and cost us very little to organise. All the prizes were donated to us from local - and mainly anonymous - people. Even the karaoke service was provided free of charge. We would like to thank everyone for these generous donations. "We have such a good response from so many people because we are raising money for The Christie - people recognise that it is a worthwhile cause." The money raised will go straight towards The Christie's
centenary appeal, in recognition of the hospital's work treating thousands of Lancashire patients, particularly those with rare and The Christie's appeal - now standing at £24m - aims to raise £25m towards supporting research and development into cancer diagnosis, and expand a series of interlinked projects to bring about "kinder", shorter and more successful cancer treatments and care. A presentation for "A Night of St Columbus Club" also took place in Millom, on the same night, where £110 was handed over to Christine Blease, the Regional Appeals Officer for The Christie. Anyone who is interested in fundraising for The Christie can contact Christine Blease at The Christie Appeals Office on 0161 446 3988, or Pamela Lloyd on 01229 773238.
