Stars help WPC Gill nab £1040 for Cancer Appeal

It's a fair cop! Celebrities Billy Bean (left) Tommy Docherty and James H Reeve are nabbed by Cheadle police woman Gill Tushingham to help raise £1,040 for the 'Christie's' appeal, with assistance from ardent Campaigner Bob Mathews (front).

Gill, who lives in Bramhall, has taken part in the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride for the last two years to help the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre and has become a valued member of the hospital's redoubtable Stockport Christie Campaigners fund raising group.

But she had never previously organised an event herself until, aided and abetted by her friend, financial adviser Kathy Marsden of Woodsmoor, she set about planning a Sports Dinner.

They were greatly helped by the owner and staff of that popular sporting venue The Acton Court Hotel, Heaviley and, as a result, attracted football doyen Tommy Doc, radio DJ James H Reeve and comedian Billy Bean. Over four months firms and sporting organisations throughout Greater Manchester, including Man Utd, City and Stockport football clubs. responded to their requests for auction and raffle gifts.

More than 160 people at £20 a head attended and bid heavily for the items. This special replica shirt of Reds' goal keeping legend Peter Schmeichel, (as modelled by Campaigner's chairman Bob Mathews) fetched £150 out of an auction total of £545. The rest was raised by a high standard raffle leaving Gill, Kathy and co. very happy with the final result.
