PRESS RELEASE

Schools help Paul run-up £4,000 for Christie's

Jumping for joyLondon Marathon runner Paul Connor shows his delight at raising more than he expected for 'Christie's' - thanks to the support of many Stockport schoolchildren.

Paul (29) of Heaviley ran the punishing 26 mile event last week in an impressive 3 hrs 12 mins 59 seconds to raise nearly £4,000 for Manchester's famous cancer centre in appreciation of the care given to his schooldays friend Julie Reindel of Heaton Norris.

Julie (31) was first treated by Christie's for non-Hodgkins lymphoma eight years ago. Tragically, last December, she was diagnosed with leukaemia and returned to Christie's, but died last week.

Currently Christie's is nearing the climax of its £25m centenary appeal to fund ground-breaking research, innovative patient facilities and the development of more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. Paul ran the London Marathon to help the hospital raise the £500,000 still needed to reach its huge target.

Office manager at Source UK.Net, the internet publishers of Stockport, he was sponsored by both families, work mates, friends and children from his own and Julie's former schools including Stockport School, Offerton High, St George's and Fairway Primary schools.

Julie was an 'old girl' of Fairway whose children and staff held a back-to-front dressing day and raised £200. They invited Paul in to receive their money and to talk about what it is like to run the London Marathon. He is a keen runner, although his only previous marathon was in Nottingham last September. However, supported by Christie Bear the hospital's mascot, and some pupils back in their reversed gear, Paul leapt to oblige.
