| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. RELEASE
Out sky-larking with drinking pals 'Bazza,' from Standish Lower Ground, was knocked unconscious and badly bruised his back in the 40ft fall. Happily he has made a complete recovery so, for the last two years, he and a large number of Wigan area mates, commemorate the anniversary of his lucky escape by fund raising for 'Christie's'. Their ritual starts with a mass cluster around the offending tree, outside The Station Hotel, Gathurst. The 'tour' continues inside, visits the nearby 'Bird in Hand' and 'Navigation' pubs before moving on to The Plough & Harrow,' Shavington, where events are hosted by landlords Stephen and Andrea Dimelow. For three successive nights they laid on entertainment to help 'Bazza' and co. raise money towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. Local singers Debbie James, Lee Michaels and Jennifer Jones all donated their services. Incessant rain ruined an intended football match between customers, so The Christie crowd went ten pin bowling instead. Local firms paid to sponsor The Christie tee-shirts worn by supporters, and special thanks are due to CSM Interiors. "After recovering from the fall from the tree I thought that instead of just a booze-up each year we maybe could do something to help a good cause," explained Bazza. "Two customers at my local The Plough, called Lee Griff and Irma Ball, have both been treated at Christie's so last year we decided to raise money for the hospital's appeal. That was tremendous and we got over £1,700 but this year, with the weather being so bad, we have received just over £600 so far, although there is more sponsorship money to come in." Unhappily for 'Bazza' it all continues to be a painful experience. He was heavily backed to have his hairy chest waxed by more-than-eager local beautician and customer Kelly Carberry (far left). Bar staff member Carol Woodcock (centre) also had a more-than-close shave - her hair being completely sheared by local hairdresser Lisa Bamber.(with clippers).
