Incessant driving rain was the main hazard, although breathing apparatus was not required as Dean Pidcock (pictured) watched by most of his Course 3-2000 training unit mates, neared the top yet again. Dean and the other trainees each went up and down a ladder some 25 times to amass the aggregate height of the greatest mountain in the world - some 9,000 metres. In the process they raised £3,000 in sponsorships from families and friends, to be shared equally between the Firemen's Benevolent Fund and 'Christie's.' Manchester's famous cancer centre had also benefited from a sponsored ten mile run by some 27 other trainees at the end of last year which added another £1,740 to the hospital's £25m centenary appeal. "To effectively scale the height of Everest was the lads' own idea," said Sub Officer Carl Yarwood. "All training units are asked to do some kind of event for charity but we had never attempted anything like this before." The 'mountaineers' are now finalising their training before being assigned to fire stations throughout Greater Manchester. Ends For further information: contact: GMCFS S.O. Yarwood 0161 908 5155 |
