PRESS RELEASE
12th April 2001
'Queen' event crowned by £5,000 for cancer appeal

They are they championsBunbury Village Hall, near Tarporley, Chester, may seem an off-beat setting for tribute evenings to pop legends 'Queen' and their lead guitarist Brian May but the gigs proved a regal success.

Over 500 people paying £10 each attended over the two nights when their strong support helped raise nearly £5,000 for the 'Christie's' appeal.

That amount includes a total of £1,750 from the auctioning of two Fender Affinity Stratocaster electric guitars, specially signed by Brian May and given by 'Sound Control' of Salford, in aid of the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre.

Nathan Mathers, who leads 'Maybe' the Queen tribute band - and looks not unlike his idol Brian May - holds one of the guitars while organisers Vanessa Greenbury (far left), Anton Farmer and Jo McDonald delight in their success. The gigs were Anton's idea. 'Maybe' topped the bill supported by Freya and CPs Blues Band, formed by local youngsters.

"Seven years ago Christie's treated me for throat cancer which could have been terminal," said Anton simply. "Here in Bunbury we have a group of friends who want to give something back so we have set up MAC - 'Music Against Cancer' - to fight the disease. This was our first event and we hope to hold others in the future."

Anton, 54, has retired from a colourful TV career as specialist high speed sports cameraman and later director. He was also a member of the Climax Blues Band and so masterminded the lighting set ups and sound arrangements for the gigs which were operated by members of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.

Afterwards Anton paid his own tribute - to Vanessa, Jo and their small army of helpers. "People were so generous. We had many donated prizes including ten pairs of tickets to auction for the Manchester Indoor Karting track," he said.
