PRESS RELEASE
12th April 2001
Pat's special show is a smash for Christie's

A great result for Pat and WilfShe had never run a charity event before but Pat McLaren of Aspull set out to organise an entertainment night for The Christie - "hoping for £1,000"- to thank Manchester's world famous cancer centre for helping her combat the disease.

Pat and her fiancé Wilf Arstall of nearby Adlington have both lost partners to cancer so their families, friends and Wilf's workmates at Leyland Trucks, Leyland, all rallied to help. Pat's family and friends in Wigan, Bolton and Westhoughton and Wilf's in Adlington and Chorley all sold £5 tickets, raising coach loads of people for their special event.

In fact over 300 attended and the raffle and donations collection was so successful that this week Pat and Wilf handed over a remarkable £4,600 to Christie consultant medical oncologists Dr Mark Saunders (left) and Dr Richard Cowan (far right) who will put the money towards further equipment.

Pat and Wilf had a real ace card. By chance, they had met George Roper of TV's 'The Comedians' fame on a holiday to Spain years ago and become friends with the Sandbach comic and his family. When George, himself a patient at Christie's, heard what they were planning he simply said: "Just find me a club".

They did - Aspull Village Club where George was supported by a strong line up of local talent. Artists included 12-year-old Lauren Waterworth, Hindley's new recording contract singing sensation, with Phil Richmond, Nicki and Jerome as the other singers. There was also the Spencer Young Band run by one of Wilf's mates at Leyland Trucks where he is an engineer,

Letters appealing for prizes met with a marvellous response. The Grand Hotels in Blackpool and Llandudno both gave weekend breaks for two, while a helicopter flight featured among a host of supporting offers and raffle prizes. It all left Pat and Wilf "delighted and more than grateful" at the final result from their great night.
