For they have actually raised £4,400 in appreciation of Christie's care for vending machine engineer Brian Fielding (53) who died from a rare form of stomach cancer last April. In the autumn Brian's widow Jean, family and friends set about fund raising towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's world famous cancer centre. Their quest for £2,000 began with a car boot sale. This was followed by a special football match involving former Manchester City 'greats' Asa Hartford, David White and other 'Soccer All Stars' against past and present local league players for which Rossendale United donated their ground and all facilities. "Rossendale United and a crowd drawn from all over the Rochdale area were so generous that we had raised our target amount by the end of the match," explained committee member Frank Kutereba. "But we had also planned a Christie's gift fair in the Wheatsheaf Centre followed by a variety night." The special show recently took place at Littleborough Cricket Club with Stu's Road Show topping the bill and all acts giving their services. Both events were so well supported that 'Brian's Friend's' doubled their money. Said Frank: "We couldn't be more delighted - or grateful." Ends
