PRESS RELEASE
25th March 2001
Volunteer parachutists jump to it for Christie's

Hanging around in a good causeThis is a real chance to push yourself to the limit for the 'Christie's' appeal - make a parachute drop from 3,500 ft.

Stockport based Manchester Parachute School have come up with this 'white knuckle glide' for Manchester's world famous cancer centre. Already many dare devils, like Isabel Roden of Heaton Mersey, shown in training, are committed to taking the plunge.

An office manager for Leedex, the Manchester PR consultants, Isabel is a daughter of Angela Roden, Christie's Director of Appeals, who has recently been treated for breast cancer.

"I wanted to help Christie's because of all they have done for mum," explained Isabel. "But I also wanted to do something that would be exciting and fun. This is certainly it, although I have never done anything like it before."

For a minimum of £300 in sponsorships any healthy person over 18 (younger with parental consent) can be trained and equipped to make such a jump. At least £155 will go towards Christie's £25m centenary appeal, now £1m short of its massive target.

The fee provides two evenings of after-work instruction and practise at the parachute school, off Chestergate, Stockport. The real thing will be scheduled, (weather permitting) at your convenience during weekends throughout the year. Then nine parachutists will jump each time from a twin engine BN Islander aircraft based at a private airfield at Garstang near Preston.

Said Chris: "We always use a totally controllable main parachute which opens automatically, plus a reserve chute, and after training most people do actually land on their feet."

To take part jumpers must first register with Christie's Appeals Office - 0161 446 3988 and then book in at the specially discounted rate at the parachute school on 0161 798 6895.
