PRESS RELEASE
24th March 2001
Church raises £4,000 in thanks to Christie's

Christian charityMembers of Royton Trinity Methodist Church have now raised £4,000 for the 'Christie's' appeal - out of gratitude.

Gratitude for the fact that Manchester's famous cancer centre is currently helping three women church members while a fourth is also being treated for cancer.

Retired Chadderton and Bury shopkeeper Mrs Anne Marsden wanted to help hospital's £25m centenary appeal as she was first treated there for breast cancer at the age of 60 - 17 years ago . Anne who, with husband Frank, first ran a newsagents and sweets shop in Chadderton for 17 years and then a cards and toys stall in Bury's indoor market, put her idea forward.

"I asked the church members to support me. Every section agreed to do something and they have all contributed to this wonderful result for Christie's," she explained.

Royton's Methodists began their Christie campaign last autumn. The Wesley Guild staged a concert and there was a general book sale. Money was also raised from a coffee morning, men's, choir, music, snooker, evening class and Sunday night live teenage group. Special events were held by the Under 10s Shell Club, toddlers, busy mums, women's section, dance club, brownies, scouts and beavers. Then Anne and Frank braved a snow storm for their own authorised collection on Royton market which added £70.

Avid Christie supporter Bob Splaine (second right) of Atherton was delighted to attend a sell-out concert and receive the cheque from the minister, the Rev Bob Gollins, supported by the church's successful cancer patients (left to right) Lisa Shanks, Jean Kay, Anne Marsden and Eunice Garside.
