PRESS RELEASE
23rd March 2001
Claire gets the gloves off for Christie's - in Kosovo

For glove and moneyWhen Stockport army corporal Claire MacCarron decided to do her bit for 'Christie's' nothing stopped her. Not even the fact she was on active duty - in Kosovo, the Balkans' trouble spot.

"I have done charity work before. But this time I wanted to help a cause that combats men's prostate cancer - so Christie's was the obvious choice," said Claire (26) of Heaton Moor who is with Ist Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

From Sky Sports TV Claire obtained a very special 'prize' - a pair of boxing gloves signed by both Lennox Lewis and Franz Botha, the South African who lost to Britain's world heavyweight champion in his last fight.

While in Pristina Claire did some reporting work for the British Forces Broadcasting Service who agreed to auction the gloves on air for Christie's. Corporal Martin Baker (right) serving with the Royal Green Jackets, bid highest - £304.40p and is shown receiving the gloves from Claire.

Now back at home, Claire explained that tension in the Balkans has heightened considerably since she left the area where her Battalion is scheduled for a further tour in August next year.

She has been in the army for nine years, having enlisted a year after leaving Chorlton Convent School. So far, she has been on exercises in Cyprus and Poland and is now bound for Germany. " I love army life, it is always interesting." said Claire.
