| This section of the Christie's website is no longer being updated. It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

RELEASE This photograph is deliberately dated - in tribute to the amazing £25,000 Wigan and Leigh supporters have raised for 'Christie's' in their first year. Group Chairman Carl Sharpe and Treasurer Rita Prentice of Goose Green are clearly delighted with their monster cheque. "This is far more than ever we expected when we started," said Carl of Higher Ince. "We are only a small group and we started from scratch not knowing one another. Our members have certainly worked hard, but we could not have achieved anything like this without the terrific support of people and businesses throughout the area". Carl and his team began fund raising towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre exactly 12 months ago. Christie's carries out some 30,000 patient treatments a year on people throughout their district - so the group are determined to go on fund raising until the hospital achieves its massive target later this year. Currently Christie's need a further £1 m to reach their target. Most of the money so far received is being used to fund ground breaking research, to create innovative patient facilities and to develop more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. The campaign, publicly launched in May 1997, is now recognised as the most successful charity appeal ever outside London. Ends For further
