PRESS RELEASE
9th March 2001
Club's £2,252 Christie effort swelled by 20st 'Tina'

When Reddish Working Men's Club set out to help 'Christie's' they produced a lot of goodies. Admittedly 'the world's only 20 stone drag Tina Turner look-alike' was a somewhat odd contribution, but the £2,252 that resulted is very positive indeed.

It fell to 'Tina' (alias club compere Tommy Boyle) to announce the outcome of their efforts for Manchester's famous cancer centre. Most of the 1,400 members of the Gregg Street club contributed to the cause via competitions masterminded by entertainment secretary John Wright.

All of which enabled John (left) to present the money this week to avid Christie supporter Bob Mathews, (right) chairman of the hospital's Stockport Campaigners supporter group. In the centre is Mrs Carol Dawson whose brother-in-law John died from cancer last month. At the funeral they collected £220 for the hospital, which swelled the club's cheque.

John Wright explained that the fund raising began just before Christmas when they decided to raffle a Whitbread holiday for the hospital's centenary appeal. Next they were given a giant teddy bear which the winner gave back and so they took it to St. Francis House children's hospice on Christmas Day. One women member decorated gift tags with pressed flowers which she sold and others brought in other prizes. "Members supported anything and everything," said John. "Every one has heard of Christie's and everyone wanted to help."
