It remains online as a historical record of the astonishing success of The Christie Hospital's Centenary Appeal which raised £25m in the four years from 1997 to 2001. Fundraising is just as necessary as ever of course, to provide Real Help for Real Hope for ourselves and for future generations. Click here to bring yourself up to date with what's happening. | |

PRESS
RELEASE Manchester Cathedral is to host an ecumenical, multi-faith service giving thanks for The Christie Hospital's worldwide contribution to health and healing over the past 100 years. Anyone who has ever had any connection with Christie's is welcome to help celebrate the life-saving cancer centre's centenary by attending the service on Sunday, March 11 at 3pm. Taking part will be people from many Christian denominations together with Jewish and Muslim communities - reflecting The Christie's own diversity in a catchment area spanning the entire North West region. The address will be given by Sir Kenneth Calman, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University, former government Chief Medical Officer and co-author of the Calman-Hine report on cancer services. This is revolutionising the delivery of cancer services and has led to the setting up of cancer units in general hospitals. Says the Rev Judie Horrocks, leader of the hospital's chaplaincy team: "We are excited about this opportunity to mark The Christie's achievements and remember those connected with the first 100 years of this pioneering hospital, either as patients, staff or supporters. Building on the vision that founded Christie's a century ago, we will also look forward to the future with confidence and renew our commitment to providing high quality, compassionate health care to patients with cancer". Church leaders present will include the Rt Rev Christopher Mayfield, Bishop of Manchester, and the Rt Rev Terence Brain, Bishop of Salford. Among civic heads will be Colonel John Timmins, Lord Lt of Greater Manchester; Major John Abbott, High Sheriff; the Lord Mayor Cllr Hugh Barrett; Mayors from Greater Manchester Boroughs and the Chairs of Cheshire and Lancashire County Councils. The NHS Executive, North West Health Authorities, hospital Trusts and local Community Health Councils will also be represented. Christie staff, patients, volunteers and supporters will include those who have helped raise more than £24m for the hospital's £25m centenary appeal or supported other fundraising for The Christie. Greater Manchester Hospitals Choir, which raises money for the Malcolm Sargent Cancer fund, will lead the hymns and perform Vivaldi's 'Gloria In Excelsis Deo'. Adds Rev Horrocks: "We would be delighted if it was standing room only as the countless people whose lives have been touched by the work of Christie's join us in this unique opportunity for celebration".
