Two £1m donations - to 'Christie's' lift the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre to within £1m of its ultimate target. The huge sums have come from Airtours, the North West based holiday specialists, and from the charity 'CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA' set up by London businessman Eddie O'Gorman and his wife Marion. For the past three years Airtours staff have collected holidaymakers' unwanted foreign coins on flights and run fund raising events in resorts throughout the world to amass £545,000. But the remainder of their £1m is a staggeringly generous £455,000, in three separate amounts, from company Chairman David Crossland and his wife Anne. When Christie's appeal was launched in 1997 Airtours pledged unstinting support - their efforts being kick-started by the Crosslands with a £100,000 donation. The couple followed up in 1998/99 with a slightly larger gift to match foreign coin collections. As the appeal nears its end, the Crosslands have now gifted another £226,000 of their own money to round up the final Airtours' contribution to £1m. Said Christie's Appeals Director Angela Roden: "Words cannot convey our gratitude for these marvellous gifts. We have received tremendous support from Airtours group staff all over the world, but for David and Anne Crossland to add yet a further large sum to their major contribution is incredibly generous and has caught us totally by suprise. 'CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA' is also a long standing supporter and the contribution being made by the charity is equally amazing." Mr Crossland explained: "I have a good friend who has had cancer. When you become close to cancer, you become close to a place like Christie's. The centre does a splendid job on two levels - treatment and research. It is also a very caring hospital. I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the place". Mr O'Gorman started 'CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA' in 1988 after losing his youngest son and daughter to cancer. To date the charity has bequeathed some £14m to various hospitals and research centres. The charity has now donated £750,000 to Christie's appeal and the remaining £250,000 to complete the £1m pledge will be given early next year. Said Mr O'Gorman: "One of the key remaining objectives of Christie's centenary appeal is the setting up and equipping of a world class Cancer Diagnostic Centre where the charity's money will be used to advance research into childhood leukaemia. It is very important that more and more children are helped to overcome cancer. Christie's is doing excellent work in this field." Ends For further
