PRESS RELEASE
17th January 2001
Rita's own 'stars' earn £2,269 for Christie's

When Rita Baron and her family staged a charity night before 300 people it was the 'Christie's' appeal they had in their minds - rather than 'Stars in Their Eyes'.

For both Rita, of Marsh Green, Wigan, and her daughter Maria are being treated by Manchester's renowned cancer centre - Rita for breast cancer and Maria for cervical cancer.

But that did not stop mum doing a Shania Twain act during their concert at the St Thomas Labour Club across the road and the one night efforts of her family and friends have now totted up to an amazing £2,269 towards Christie's £25m centenary appeal.

Two of Rita's three other daughters also took the stage. Emma Butler appeared as Cher and Vanda Richardson as Madonna. Vanda even lost her long curly brown hair for the cause, her head being completely shaved. People paid between £5 and £10 a time for a turn with the clippers raising £750. Vanda then promptly put on a blonde wig to impersonate 'the queen of pop'. Rita's fourth daughter, Sheila Richardson lives in Spain, but her brother-in-law Chris Baron earned more money for Christie's by having his chest waxed.

"It was a fantastic night and only the club's fire regulations stopped us selling twice as many tickets," said Rita after she handed their money over to Christie's regional appeals officer Christine Blease. "After a year of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment and care at Christie's I and my family and friends just had to give something back for all they have done to help me and Maria. But we never thought our concert would be so successful."

Said Christine: "Rita and her family have given a further boost to the efforts of so many people in Wigan and Leigh to help us. Although the group was only formed ten months ago it has already raised £25,000. That's brilliant, but they believe they could do even better if they had more supporters. So if anyone else would like to help, they can ring me on 0161 446 3988 for further details."
