RELEASE This may be just a kick-about, but behind the £3,409 cheque Bolton pals Matt Hyland (left) and Peter Catteral have just presented to Christie's Jacky Plant, lies an old boys' soccer re-union -and a lot of goodwill. Now 21, Matthew and Peter grew up together, went to Turton High School and then played soccer regularly for Bolton Lads' Club in the local Sunday league until four years ago. They split up briefly and when they next met Matt was shocked to learn that Peter was now being treated at The Christie for Hodgkins Lymphoma. "I felt that I wanted to help raise some money for Christie's for helping Peter," explained Matt. "He gave me his permission and we decided to have a football match by getting all our old Sunday League mates back together. "Bolton Lads' Club were brilliant. They loaned us the kit and provided a team for us to play against. All our old Sunday League pals came back to help Peter, even ones who had gone on to universities all over the country. They all got themselves sponsored by family and friends to take part. It was a full eleven a side match which was so close it went to penalties. A friend of Peter's, Dave Callaghan, who made a substantial donation, also gave a trophy which is now on show in our local, The Volunteer in Bromley Cross where we had a buffet afterwards." The icing on their cake was provided by Matt's parents Dave and Helen Hyland. They asked for donations instead of presents to mark their Silver Wedding anniversary, so adding a further £400. The full amount given to regional appeals officer Jacky swells the £25m 'Christie's' appeal beyond £23m. Manchester's world famous cancer centre aims to mark the its centenary this year by funding research, new patient facilities and developing more effective and 'kinder' cancer treatments. "I never expected we would get so much and we intend to invite other teams for a tournament this year and to make it an annual event," said Matt who is a trade sales assistant for Hoover in Bolton while Peter hopes to resume work as a life guard attendant shortly.
