RELEASE Christie - and City - awash with gratitude to Bert
It is for £7,050 - the proceeds of a special dinner to honour club legend Bert Trautmann. Yet the event, organised by devoted fans Alan Grafton (left) of Gorton and Terry Wood (right) of Openshaw for City's famous German goalkeeper, was almost a wash-out. Bert now lives in retirement near Valencia in Spain. He had agreed to attend what he thought was another City re-union dinner not knowing he was to be the surprised guest of honour. But, four days before the event, his home and village were severely flooded following incessant rains. "Bert then said that it was now impossible for him to come," said Alan: "So we were forced to explain that the dinner was for him, that we had sold all 500 tickets and there was a big waiting list. Bert promptly made special arrangements for the security of his home and to travel." The fund raising event was Alan's idea. "I wanted to help Christie's centenary appeal because they have successfully treated my wife Doreen for breast cancer. I thought it would be great to have a dinner to honour Bert. In the 1950's when I was 15 -16, I was a City goalkeeper for their A and B teams. Bert used to coach me and he is still my idol. We had City directors, former star players, current 'keeper Nicky Weaver and no less than eight previous goalkeepers present. But, better still, we raised far more for Christie's than our £5,000 target because there was such support on the night." But one key figure did miss out. Alan's co-organiser Terry Wood, who works alongside him for Manchester County FA and on other charity events, had to go into hospital for a replacement hip operation. "I was more than disappointed, but the fact that Bert got there despite his own severe problems was what really mattered," said Terry. Ends For more details
