RELEASE Washed-out duck race helps net £900 for Christie's
Customers flooded to Bury's Bridge Inn to sponsor 1,000 plastic ducks in a special race for the 'Christie's' appeal. But it was a real wash-out. "Sorry it's off," owner Terry Harrison of Heywood had to tell them, "there's just too much water." Even by pub standards 'too wet for ducks' sounds a real tall story. "It was," said Terry. "Incessant rain had taken the River Roach, which flows at the back of our pub at Heap Bridge, some six foot above normal. It was running just too fast and too dangerous". So instead the numbers of all the ducks were put into a hat and the winners drawn. But the weather could not put a damper on the rest of the pub's fun day and the stalls and childrens' events did a roaring trade. Which is why this week Terry and wife Veronica with the Bridge's manageress Susan Blunt were still able to present a £900 cheque to Christie's regional appeals officer Jacky Plant. It was the second year running that the Bridge had devoted a day to helping the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. They raised £1,400 last year, aided by donations from customers of Terry's printing equipment business in Heywood where he is a printing engineer. He and wife 'Ronnie' started helping Christie's after she was successfully treated there for breast cancer five years ago. They notched some more money on New Year's Eve by charging £1 a ticket admission and giving half the proceeds to the hospital and converting the rest into raffle prizes. "Simpler than a duck race," said Terry "but we shall again be running events for Christie's this coming year." Ends For further
