RELEASE Janine's African climb is for Christie's Having been to Australia and Asia, Janine Birtwistle of Bury is now heading for Africa where she hopes to reach a new peak of personal experience - but this time for the 'Christie's' appeal. Her actual target is Kilimanjaro - the highest mountain on the continent. If Janine (26) and boy friend Darren Hurley (27) reach its 19,400 ft summit next month (February 2001) they expect to raise about £1,000 towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. It may be more. Janine works as a consultant for STA Travel, the adventure holiday specialists. who are supporting her with a special travel evening at the Walkabout pub on Quay Street Manchester on Wednesday January 24. Admission - and advice - is free with tickets available from both STA's Deansgate and Oxford road offices, and there will be a collection to boost Janine's sponsorship money. With Darren, a self employed Bury joiner, Janine will leave on Feb. 2 for Tanzania and the week long climb with a small Acacia Travel group. Sabena Airlines are helping with flight costs and their attempt is being backed by STA and employees, plus families and friends. The couple are also dedicating £600 of their own money to Christie's cause. "I used to be an auxiliary nurse at Bury General Hospital," explained Janine "and we sometimes refer cancer cases to Christie's because of the special care and facilities. When Darren's uncle, Barry Hurley of Ramsbottom, died of bowel cancer we decided that instead of just trying to climb Kilimanjaro we would do it to help Christie's". She has lived and worked on three continents spending a year in both Australia and Hong Kong, plus time in India. "It all started when I was 17 and went to a kibbutz in Israel and it has just sort of escalated," said Janine. "But climbing Kilimanjaro for Christie's will be a new experience for both of us."
