RELEASE Prestwich women 'club' efforts in cancer fight Like many people Prestwich business women Judith Vaughan and Chris Day have their personal reasons for wanting to help 'Christie's'. But their methods have generated such support that they have quickly raised over £9,000. Chris (54) works in a Jewish butchers in the town and after she came under Christie's care for breast cancer, her friend Judith (51) who owns Manchester Fireplaces, suggested they put on a "concert or two" at Heaton Park Social Club towards the £25m centenary appeal of Manchester's famous cancer centre. Chris and Judith are committee members, and with the help of the full committee - in particular actress and former director of TV's 'Emmerdale' Noreen Kershaw - they began staging shows. 'Scully' the comedian and local artists, were quick to volunteer their services. The concerts began 18 months ago but it was the enthusiastic support of club members that really made things happen. "It's all just kind of snow balled," explained Judith this week. "Club members began doing their own thing for Christie's. Lesley Thomas did a parachute jump, Chris Barry a sponsored swim and our club football team staged their own bike ride to Blackpool." Next the two women began writing letters requesting donations from local firms. Creamline Dairies of Salford responded by donating £1,000 in both 1999 and this year. Now Chris and Judith sell Christie gifts through the club and, with such strong local backing are confident of reaching £10,000. Ends For further information contact
