RELEASE Cabbies tip cancer appeal towards £25m target
These Manchester taxi drivers are happy to hit city and district streets with a campaign that is effectively costing them money. The sides and boots of nine city cabs have been transformed into highly mobile promotions for the 'Christie's' centenary appeal of the North West's world famous cancer centre. The cabbies have donated their valuable advertising space to help carry the appeal - now standing at £22m - on the final stage of its journey to a £25m target. The huge sum will fund research, new patient facilities and the development of more effective treatments at Europe's largest cancer centre. Each cab is emblazoned with the appeal's logo, free phone donation line 0500 557055 and web site www.christies.org In appreciation the Lord Mayor, Coun Hugh Barrett, an avid Christie's supporter, received drivers and behind-the-scenes workers at the Town Hall to thank them and the Manchester Evening News which is both funding the promotion and making a substantial donation to the appeal. He told them: "This will really get the campaign out on the streets and serve as a constant reminder of what Christie's are striving to achieve. We are all at risk of developing cancer and so it is entirely in our own interests to help Christie's to help us." News' managing director Brian Rhodes agreed -"which is why we are so pleased to support because Christie's work is important to everyone." The Christie designs, created by advertising agency McCann-Erickson, evolved under free technical advice from taxi specialists Mann & Overton, and the heftily discounted vinyls were made and fitted by Signs Express of Trafford Park. "The cabs look terrific, really eye catching," said Christie's projects manager Paul Bailey. "We owe much - yet again - to the Lord Mayor, Manchester City Council and the MEN, as well as to our many professional supporters on this project. But without the goodwill of the taxi owners this would not have happened." Ends For further information
